About LGEC

LGEC is a registered charity, based in Preston. It was established in 1980 and is one of approximately 50 Development Education Centres in the UK whose work in schools, colleges and communities encompasses the following principles:

  • Enabling people to understand the links between their own lives and those of people throughout the world.

  • Increasing understanding of the economic, social, political and environmental forces which shape our lives.

  • Developing the skills, attitudes and values that enable people to work together to bring about change and take control of their own lives.

  • Working towards a more just and sustainable world in which power and resources are shared equitably.

More than ever, in a world which faces concerns such as global poverty, climate change, and racial and religious tensions, education has a key role to play to help people understand the world around them, to enable them to improve it, and to find solutions to our global problems.

A fundamental belief of LGEC and other development education centres around the country is that education is instrumental in bringing about change. Children and young people have inherited a world which they passionately believe needs to change, yet are often ill-equipped, misinformed or frequently disempowered to act. It is within this context LGEC believes that learning for action and positive global change can be achieved through our work.

A global dimension already features in the revised secondary national curriculum as a whole curriculum dimension approach. Global education is being increasingly valued and recognised as a means of working with schools, youth work and adult education, complementing a broad range of government agendas including community cohesion and sustainable development.

In Lancashire, LGEC aims to engage, mobilise and empower learners to act towards global issues, seeking to create greater understanding and respect in local communities. LGEC works with schools, community groups, young people and in further education across Lancashire, to champion global education, sustainability and a global dimension to learning.

Alongside a number of longer-term projects, LGEC supports global education by offering professional training and a wide range of specialist resources to teachers, tutors and youth workers in schools, colleges, youth groups and community groups.
